Electrolysis And Indian Skin

Electrolysis is beneficial to all skin types. Permanently removing the coarse hairs on your chin, cheeks and neck improves your complexion dramatically. Hair growth on the face is often accompanied by acne, skin discolouration and even minor scarring from the constant picking, tweezing, waxing and general manipulation of the skin.

Most skin, but especially black and brown skin,  suffers from varying degrees of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in the areas of hair growth. It looks something like this:

On light skin post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is pinkish. On darker skin the discolouration takes on a brownish hue as depicted in the image above. PIH is especially prevalent in black and brown skins because of the increased melanin in the natural skin tone. An overproduction of melanin, caused by an injury, results in PIH. If you follow my aftercare instructions you can almost completely avoid PIH between appointments.

Electrolysis treatments cause PIH if your skin is prone to it. This is the case with most South Asian and African skin tones. You may have a good indication of how you’ll respond to electrolysis treatment based on how you’ve healed from past wounds. PIH after electrolysis is a side effect of the electrolysis wound. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is a temporary condition and clear up with proper after care and a bit of healing time.

Hyperpigmentation is a pigmented spot slightly larger than the follicle opening (approximately 1-1.5mm in diameter). There may be a point where you think “OMG, it’s a scar!!!”  Don’t worry, it’s not. It always heals.

Your skin benefits from hair removal because there is less irritation and fewer blemishes on the surface of your skin. Over time you realize that your skin tone is clearer and more even overall. Do not let the fear of PIH delay your electrolysis treatment. I give very clear guidelines on how to treat your skin following electrolysis. You can ensure your skin stays blemish free between appointments. It just takes some TLC.

In summary, Indian skin often shows sign of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation even prior to starting electrolysis. The skin heals once the hair is gone and the complexion is brighter and more clear.
