Electrolysis Aftercare

Effective electrolysis treatment can leave the skin irritated immediately following treatment. Redness, mild swelling and a warm sensation are all very common side effects of a good electrolysis treatment. (Side effects on the face tend to be much milder than the body due to the lower treatment energy) To ensure proper healing of the skin following treatment with electrolysis it is very important you follow the guidelines below.

• Do not apply makeup, creams or lotions to area for 12-24 hours following electrolysis treatment. You are risking infection and/or acne if you do so.
• Avoid direct sunlight for 48 hours following treatment and use a sunscreen on your face daily after that for the duration of your electrolysis treatment.
• Do not touch, pick, or scratch any scabs that form on the body (facial work rarely produces anything other than mild swelling and redness). If your skin itches during the healing process, gently massage lotion or oil (rosehip oil is great) into the area to alleviate itching.
• Avoid tight fitting clothing over treated areas (bikini line will be irritated by high-cut underwear, stomach can be irritated by belt buckles or the waistlines of pants).

Doing nothing to your skin is usually the best electrolysis aftercare.

While the facial area rarely displays obvious signs of electrolysis treatment, the body (especially the legs) will often develop red dots at the follicle opening. This does not indicate any permanent damage to the skin. The skin will heal within a few weeks. Do not interfere with the natural healing process in any way. Absolutely do not use any abrasive scrubs or serums on either the face or body after electrolysis.

Some skin types are prone to hyperpigmentation, which means that a discolouration may appear at the follicle opening. The colour can range from pink to dark brown depending on your skin tone. This side effect is temporary and will clear up within 3 months to one year. Hyperpigmentation is also connected to sun exposure. If your skin is prone to hyperpigmentation you should wear sunblock or cover your skin whenever you’re outdoors.
