Electrolysis And Black Skin

Electrolysis and Black Skin

Electrolysis has a similar effect on all skin types, however, the side effects of electrolysis on black skin are amplified. Swelling and redness and even some heat on the face is normal after an effective electrolysis treatment. These side effects occur regardless of skin colour or type.

One side effect of electrolysis related to skin colour is postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). On darker skin, particularly African or Southeast Asian people, hyperpigmentation is significant when it appears because it can be difficult to camouflage. Often the hair growth causes hyperpigmentation around the follicle anyway and removing the hair with electrolysis improves the skin significantly. Treatment Outcome For Electrolysis And Black Skin

If you follow my aftercare instructions you can avoid virtually all risk of hyperpigmentation between your electrolysis treatments: PREPARE FOR ELECTROLYSIS

Removing the hair is the first step in healing the hyperpigmentation. The hair growth itself is the main factor in the appearance of hyperpigmentation on all skin tones. Here is an example of hyperpigmentation on black skin as a result of the growth of hair itself.

Hyperpigmentation evident on black skin (under the chin) prior to electrolysis treatment.

The area with hair growth is noticeably darker than the area without, thus,  removing the hair is essential in clearing up the skin.

Often you’ll notice discolouration around the follicle opening, especially if the hair is coarse. Once the hair doesn’t grow anymore hyperpigmentation ceases to be a problem.

In conclusion, black skin has particular needs when it comes to electrolysis. Although hyperpigmentation is a risk, it can be managed with appropriate aftercare.
