Best Numbing Cream For Electrolysis Pain Relief
Many of my clients manage the pain of electrolysis without any pain relievers . Some clients can actually fall asleep during electrolysis treatments. Other clients admit it hurts but they get through it with just a little wincing. Every one else has to experiment with a variety of methods to relieve pain. The 2 most popular numbing creams for electrolysis pain relief are EMLA and ZENSA. (I sell Zensa at my office for $42CAD plus hst.)
Emla and Zensa For Electrolysis Pain Relief

Emla numbing cream for pain relief during electrolysis.
Zensa and Emla are equal in every way except that Emla is more difficult to find and slightly more expensive these days.
Both are great from my point of view because they are very easy to remove with a tissue and neither Emla nor Zensa leaves a residue. The drawback from the client’s point of view is the effort it takes to get numb.
How To Apply Numbing Cream For Electrolysis Pain Relief
- Clean skin to be treated. Trim long hair so the numbing cream doesn’t get caught in it.
- Apply a base layer of numbing cream to the skin and gently rub it in (do not rub it off!)
- Apply a second, thicker, layer of numbing cream to the area.
- Cover area with plastic wrap or a Tegaderm patch. Press on the dressing gently to help cream absorb.
- Apply a tensor bandage or some type of extra pressure to keep the dressing in place. The added pressure also helps the cream to absorb into the skin.
- Reapply a fresh layer of cream every 30 minutes until your appointment if you want to be really numb.
Numbing cream for electrolysis must be used liberally. A 30g tube of Zensa or Emla is enough for a handful of appointments maximum. You should be able to see the white of the cream through the plastic dressing.
