Vellus Hair And Why Do You Need Them

Vellus Hair And Electrolysis

Our faces and bodies are covered in colourless, fine hairs that are noticeable only when the light hits them at a certain angle. These shallow-rooted, slow-growing hairs are known as vellus hair. Some women find vellus hair to be quite problematic on the face because even if they are fine and colourless, vellus hair can cause a noticeable peach fuzz effect in certain lighting.

Here is an example of vellus hair on a woman’s cheeks:

Vellus Hair And Why You Need It

Neither Vivian nor I are bothered by the peach fuzz and removing it is not part of our treatment plan for her face. Many women are, however, bothered by this look and I generally advise them to trim it, rather than seek permanent hair removal for these colourless hairs. One reason for this is that removing them would be very time consuming, you simply can’t imagine the amount of hair on your face. And if you start with the vellus hairs on the sides of your face, there will be a noticeable demarcation line between the spots with hair and the spots without. Thus, if you start vellus hair removal, you have to get them ALL.

A second reason I prefer not to remove the vellus hair is because they serve several important functions. First, vellus hair gives your face contour and shading. Without that little bit of hair to absorb light your skin would reflect the light, making it appear unnaturally shiny. Second, vellus hair holds your makeup on. Your foundation needs something to cling to or you will find that it slides right off your face. I have another theory about leaving some hair on the face. I think it actually holds the skin up and removing all of it will make your skin appear looser than it is.

Removing every last bit of hair from your face also makes it obvious that you’ve had hair removal treatments so I always advise people to deal with the dark and the coarse, but let the light and fluffy stuff live. Ultimately the decision is yours though, I just wanted to give you some points to consider before you begin your treatment.
